Roentgenologic Observation of 100 Cases of Bechterew¡¯s Disease

Abstract
During the period of 11 years from Oct. 1958 to July 1970 at the National Medical Center, Seoul, Korea 100 patients of Becherew¢¥s disease were studied. The roentgenographic findings were observed in all patients, and chart reviews were done in only 48 patients. The roentgenologic findings, clinical findings and ladoratory results were analyzed.
The followings were the results:
1) The sex ratio of 100 patients was 95 males to 5 females.
2) 47 per cent of patients were 20 to 29 years old. The mean age was 31.9 years. The youngest was 18 years ole Male and the eldest was 53 years old male.
3) In 72 per cent of patients the symptoms were started before the age of 29 and the mean age of onset was 25.05 years of age.
4) The durations of the symptoms were varied from 6 months to 26 years. The average duration of symptoms was 6.88 years.
5) No relationship was observed between this disease and family history or past history.
6) The main symptom was back pain in 62 patients, stiffness of back in 29, hip pain in 25, kyphosis in 17 and knee pain in 14 respectively.
7) The hemoglobin values had no significancy, but the sedimentation rates were markedly elevated. Only 3 patients had normal sedimentation rates, and rest 45 patients out of 48 the sedimentation rates were elevated. The highest one was 120 mm/h.
8) The apophyseal joints of the lumbar spine were fused in all patients, and that of cervical spine in 14 out of 65, and that of thoeacic spine 53 out of 90 patients.
9) Calcifications of the anterior longitudinal ligament were observed in 32 per cent of patients and bony bridge formation with syndesmophytes (Bamboo spine) were seen in 50 per
cent of patients.
10) 92 per cent of cases showed changes in sacroiliac joints either destruction or fusion.
11) The most frequent sites of inuolvement of other joints were hip joints 39%, knee joints 11%, ankle joints 2% and shoulder jointsd 2% respectively.
